Center Party |
 |
Description:
A party established toward the elections for the Fifteenth Knesset by a group of MKs who left the Likud, the Labor Party, and Tzomet, and formed, toward the end of the Fourteenth Knesset a parliamentary group called Israel in the Center. Some of the central figures in the new party had never previously been members of any existing party. MK Yitzhak Mordechai, who had left the Likud, was chosen to lead the new party. The Center Party was meant, like the DMC in the 1970s, to offer an alternative to the two large parties - Labor and the Likud- but did not manage to repeat the electoral success of the DMC, and soon vanished like it. At the end of the Fifteenth Knesset only two MKs remained officially in the Center Party parliamentary group.
